If you are choosing between 6.5 Creedmoor and .308 Winchester for long-range work, you are asking the right question before you buy. Both dominate the precision rifle world, both run on AR-10 pattern uppers, and they are not interchangeable in practice. The .308 has anchored military, law enforcement, and hunting use since 1952. The 6.5 Creedmoor was engineered by Hornady in 2007 specifically to push high-BC bullets at distance.

Ballistics Head to Head

A 168-grain .308 Federal Gold Medal Match leaves the muzzle at roughly 2,650 fps. A 140-grain Hornady ELD Match starts around 2,710 fps. Close enough that it barely matters at the bench. Either cartridge demands a scope with enough elevation travel to make 1,000-yard shooting work. That requirement is non-negotiable for both.

Recoil, Barrel Life, and Shootability

A .308 generates roughly 20 to 22 ft-lbs of free recoil in a typical 8.5 lb rifle. The 6.5 lands closer to 13 to 15 ft-lbs in a comparable build, about 30 percent less. On an AR-10 the gas-operated action softens both, but the difference between them does not disappear. Run 100 rounds in a morning and you will feel it, and fast follow-up shots on hogs at night are easier with the lighter-recoiling round.

Barrel life runs the other direction. The .308 is easier on steel: expect 5,000 to 8,000 rounds before accuracy degrades. The 6.5 runs hotter through a smaller bore, so plan on 2,500 to 4,000. Context matters. A hunter shooting 200 rounds a season will never wear out either barrel. A competitor burning 3,000 rounds a year will hit the 6.5 threshold in a season or two and should budget a barrel replacement into the build.

Which Is Better for Hunting?

Deer-sized game. Where shots stretch past 400 yards across open ground, the 6.5 earns its keep. Flatter trajectory and better wind performance make it the smarter choice with a crosswind running. The Hornady ELD-X 143-grain is a proven deer bullet that expands reliably and holds together through the vitals. Inside 400 yards, a .308 with a 165-grain bonded bullet like the Nosler Partition is equally lethal and has decades behind it.

Elk, large hogs, and heavy game. Big boars are thick-skinned and heavy-boned, often taken in low light at moderate range. The .308 with 180 to 200-grain bonded bullets delivers more retained energy at those distances and offers a wider selection of deep-penetrating loads. For a large boar quartering away at 150 yards, the .308 gives you more margin. The 6.5 takes elk cleanly with premium bullets at appropriate ranges, but the heavier .308 bullets give you more when angles are bad or brush is a factor.

Shot placement always outranks cartridge choice at ethical hunting distances. Pick the one you will shoot better.

Long-Range Target and Competition

In PRS and NRL competition, the 6.5 Creedmoor displaced the .308 across both bolt-gun and gas-gun divisions within a few years of its introduction. Higher BCs, less wind drift, and lower recoil add up to faster, more accurate follow-up shots on steel from 100 to 1,200 yards. If you are shooting past 800 yards regularly, the 6.5 is the answer.

The .308 is not out of it. Inside 800 yards it remains a solid choice, and newer shooters often start there because ammo costs less and selection is wider. Both run well in AR-10 pattern semi-autos, which are legal in gas-gun divisions.

Ammo Availability and Cost

Factory match-grade .308 runs roughly $1.50 to $2.50 per round, and match 6.5 lands in the same range. Where the .308 has a clear edge is budget hunting ammunition: cheap brass-cased .308 is easy to find and noticeably less expensive per box than comparable 6.5 hunting loads. Both have excellent reloading component availability.

In a supply crunch, .308 is the one you will find on a local shelf. The 6.5 has become common at major retailers since roughly 2015 and orders online without trouble, but if you need a box on the drive out of town, .308 is the safer bet.

Platform: AR-10, Not AR-15

This is where builders make an expensive mistake. Neither cartridge runs on a standard AR-15 lower. Both require an AR-10 or LR-308 pattern platform, matched upper and lower.

The .308 is the native chambering for most AR-10 builds. Both are inherently accurate. Past 600 yards the 6.5 holds a measurable edge from its higher ballistic coefficient and lower wind drift. Inside 600 yards a quality .308 upper is not at a disadvantage. Barrel, glass, and shooter matter more than the headstamp.
