If you are stretching shots past 300 yards on open country, the cartridge in your chamber matters. The 300 Win Mag versus 7mm Rem Mag debate is one of the oldest arguments in long-range hunting, and the answer depends on bullet weight, recoil tolerance, and what you are shooting at.
The Quick Answer
For deer, pronghorn, and windy open-country shots inside 600 yards, choose the 7mm Rem Mag. It shoots flatter, drifts less in wind, and kicks noticeably less. For elk, moose, bear, and any shot past 600 yards where retained energy matters most, choose the 300 Win Mag, because it runs heavier high-BC bullets the 7mm cannot match.
Two Cartridges, One Parent Case

The 7mm Rem Mag debuted in 1962. Winchester answered with the .300 Win Mag in 1963. Sixty-plus years later neither has scored a clean knockout, which is why the argument persists.
Both descend from the belted .375 H&H Magnum. That belt is a raised ring ahead of the extractor groove, originally used to headspace the cartridge in chambers cut before SAAMI standardization. Modern chambers headspace off the shoulder, so the belt is largely vestigial, but the design stuck.
7mm Remington Magnum. A 0.284-inch bullet, 2.500-inch case, 61,000 PSI SAAMI max. It was built to push 140 to 175 grain bullets faster than the .30-06 while fitting a standard long action. High velocity plus the 7mm bore's naturally high ballistic coefficients made it a favorite for flat trajectories.
300 Winchester Magnum. Same belted architecture with a 0.308-inch bullet and a 2.620-inch case, 120 thousandths longer, at 64,000 PSI. The larger bore moves heavier bullets and delivers more frontal area on impact, which is why it became the default for large, heavy game. The tradeoff is real: the longer case seats modern high-BC projectiles deeper, cutting usable powder capacity past 200 grains.
Ballistics Compared: Velocity, Energy, and Drop
For a consistent comparison, use a 7mm Rem Mag 162-grain Hornady ELD-X at 2,940 fps with a G1 BC of 0.625, and a 300 Win Mag 180-grain Federal Trophy Bonded at 2,960 fps with a G1 BC of 0.507. Nearly identical muzzle velocities, very different stories downrange.
At the muzzle they are a wash. At 500 yards the 300 holds roughly 2,000 to 2,100 ft-lbs while the 7mm lands in the 1,700 to 1,800 range. That is a real difference on heavy game.
The 7mm fights back with ballistic coefficient. The 162-grain ELD-X sheds velocity more slowly than the 180-grain Trophy Bonded, which keeps drop surprisingly competitive despite the lighter projectile. The bigger separation is wind: at 600 yards in a 10 mph crosswind, the 7mm with a 162 to 175 grain high-BC bullet drifts roughly 1 to 2 inches less. On open ground with a steady 12 to 16 mph wind, that gap is the difference between a clean hit and a marginal one.
Where the 300 pulls decisively ahead is heavy bullets. Its larger case capacity supports 215 to 230 grain projectiles with G7 BCs the 7mm simply cannot match at equivalent weights. Past 1,200 yards, that matters.

Neither magnum is the default answer for a shooter who mostly punches paper and hunts deer. Recoil, Barrel Life, and the Cost of a Magnum
Both cartridges hit hard at both ends. In a 9-pound rifle the 7mm generates roughly 20 to 22 ft-lbs of recoil energy; the 300 pushes 25 to 28. That gap is manageable across 3 to 5 rounds on a hunt. Run 50 to 100 rounds in a session and the story changes: flinch creeps in, follow-through suffers, and spotting your own impacts gets harder.
Barrel life follows the same pattern. Both are throat burners, but the 300 burns more powder per unit of bore area and typically reaches accuracy fall-off sooner. Factor a barrel replacement into the budget if you shoot either one seriously, and factor ammunition cost too. Magnum factory loads run well above standard cartridges per box, and components cost more for handloaders.
The best long-range cartridge is the one you can shoot accurately under field conditions, not the one with the biggest number on the box.
Hunting Application by Game and Range
For whitetail on river-bottom properties or pronghorn on open plains where shots stretch past 300 yards, the 7mm Rem Mag is hard to beat. A 140 to 160 grain controlled-expansion bullet at 7mm velocities produces reliable expansion, adequate penetration, and a flatter trajectory than most hunters need.
For elk and other heavy game, the 300's extra frontal area and heavier bullets give you more margin when angles are bad or bone is in the way. Past 600 yards on elk-sized animals, the ability to run 200 to 215 grain high-BC bullets is the deciding factor.
Precision Rifle Competition
Both cartridges can show up at a match and perform, but neither is the dominant choice on the modern PRS line. Recoil is the reason. Divisions favor cartridges a shooter can spot through the scope and follow up quickly, which is why 6mm and 6.5mm chamberings took over.
