The "full-auto vs semi-auto BCG" question causes more unnecessary anxiety than almost any other AR-15 topic. New builders see "full-auto" in a product description, worry they're doing something illegal, and default to a semi-auto BCG they don't actually want. Here's the reality: the name is misleading, the full-auto profile is the modern standard, and every quality BCG on the market uses it.

First: The Naming Confusion

The "full-auto" in "full-auto BCG" describes the physical profile of the carrier, specifically the rear shroud that would engage a full-auto sear in a select-fire M16. It does not affect whether your rifle can fire in automatic mode. Whether a rifle fires semi-auto or automatic is determined by the lower receiver's fire-control group, not the BCG.

Put a full-auto BCG in a civilian AR-15. Still semi-auto. Put a semi-auto BCG in a registered M16. Still capable of automatic fire (because the auto sear is in the lower).

Everyone in the industry now calls the full-auto profile "M16 profile" or "MP profile" to reduce confusion. Same thing.

The functional difference is mass distribution. The full-auto carrier's heavier rear shroud gives the reciprocating mass more inertia, which helps the system cycle consistently across:

  • Dirty conditions with fouling buildup
  • Suppressed fire with increased back pressure
  • Heavy loads that generate more gas
  • Cold weather where lubricants thicken

The semi-auto carrier is lighter and marginally less forgiving in these conditions. For range use it's fine. For anything you rely on, it's not the right choice.

The M16A2 was designed with the full-auto profile as the reliability baseline. To restate the important part: a full-auto profile BCG is fully legal for civilians to own and use in a semi-automatic AR-15. The ATF has confirmed this repeatedly. The BCG profile does not convert a semi-auto rifle to an NFA weapon.

What would make a rifle a machinegun (and require NFA registration or be prohibited under the 1986 Hughes Amendment) is the presence of an auto sear or drop-in auto sear in the lower receiver, not the carrier profile. A full-auto BCG in a standard AR-15 lower cannot fire automatically because there's nothing to engage the sear surface. It just cycles as a heavier semi-auto BCG.

Simple advice: buy a quality full-auto profile BCG from a reputable manufacturer with MPI and HPT testing. That's it.
