Full-auto and semi-auto bolt carrier groups look almost identical but have real differences in profile, mass, and reliability. Here's what matters.
The "full-auto vs semi-auto BCG" question causes more unnecessary anxiety than almost any other AR-15 topic. New builders see "full-auto" in a product description, worry they're doing something illegal, and default to a semi-auto BCG they don't actually want. Here's the reality: the name is misleading, the full-auto profile is the modern standard, and every quality BCG on the market uses it.
First: The Naming Confusion
The "full-auto" in "full-auto BCG" describes the physical profile of the carrier, specifically the rear shroud that would engage a full-auto sear in a select-fire M16. It does not affect whether your rifle can fire in automatic mode. Whether a rifle fires semi-auto or automatic is determined by the lower receiver's fire-control group, not the BCG.
Put a full-auto BCG in a civilian AR-15. Still semi-auto. Put a semi-auto BCG in a registered M16. Still capable of automatic fire (because the auto sear is in the lower).
Everyone in the industry now calls the full-auto profile "M16 profile" or "MP profile" to reduce confusion. Same thing.
The Actual Physical Differences
The functional difference is mass distribution. The full-auto carrier's heavier rear shroud gives the reciprocating mass more inertia, which helps the system cycle consistently across:
- Dirty conditions with fouling buildup
- Suppressed fire with increased back pressure
- Heavy loads that generate more gas
- Cold weather where lubricants thicken
The semi-auto carrier is lighter and marginally less forgiving in these conditions. For range use it's fine. For anything you rely on, it's not the right choice.
Why Full-Auto Profile Wins on Reliability
The M16A2 was designed with the full-auto profile as the reliability baseline. When Colt and other manufacturers built the semi-auto AR-15 for civilians in the 1960s and 70s, they used a lighter semi-auto carrier partly to differentiate from the military version (regulatory optics) and partly because it was cheaper to machine.
The industry has since converged on the full-auto profile because:
- It's the profile the AR platform was engineered around
- Duty and military users demanded reliability across all conditions
- Suppressor use has become widespread, and suppressors benefit from more mass
- Cost has equalized (no meaningful machining savings on semi-auto profile today)
Modern BCGs from BCM, Toolcraft (who OEMs for many brands), LMT, KAC, Aero Precision, and Daniel Defense all ship full-auto profile. If a manufacturer is still selling semi-auto profile as their main BCG, that's usually a signal they're prioritizing budget over spec.
Legal Reality
To restate the important part: a full-auto profile BCG is fully legal for civilians to own and use in a semi-automatic AR-15. The ATF has confirmed this repeatedly. The BCG profile does not convert a semi-auto rifle to an NFA weapon.
What would make a rifle a machinegun (and require NFA registration or be prohibited under the 1986 Hughes Amendment) is the presence of an auto sear or drop-in auto sear in the lower receiver, not the carrier profile. A full-auto BCG in a standard AR-15 lower cannot fire automatically because there's nothing to engage the sear surface. It just cycles as a heavier semi-auto BCG.
What to Actually Buy
Simple advice: buy a quality full-auto profile BCG from a reputable manufacturer with MPI and HPT testing. That's it.

- Toolcraft (OEMs for many brands, excellent value at $130 to $180)
- BCM (proven duty spec, $170 to $220)
- LMT (enhanced bolt, $200 to $260)
- KAC (E3 enhanced bolt, $280+ for the SR-15 upgrade)
- Sons of Liberty (duty spec, $180 to $230)
- Sionics, JP, Wilson Combat, Fail Zero (specialty options with premium coatings)
Coating options (phosphate, nitride, nickel boron, etc.) are a separate topic covered in the BCG coatings guide. All modern coatings work; pick based on maintenance preference.
Skip any BCG that:
- Doesn't specify MPI (magnetic particle inspection) on the bolt
- Doesn't specify HPT (high pressure test) on the bolt
- Is priced under $80 (there are corner-cutting choices being made)
- Uses semi-auto profile without a specific reason
