What the 338 ARC Is
Hornady developed the 338 ARC to do one specific thing: push a high-BC .338-caliber bullet through a standard AR-15 lower receiver at extended range. It was not built around muzzle energy alone. It was engineered around ballistic coefficient, so the bullet holds velocity and energy further downrange than most AR-15 cartridges have any business doing.
The specs are straightforward. A .338-inch bullet diameter, projectile weights running 215 to 265 grains, and SAAMI-spec pressures that work with a dedicated barrel and a matched bolt. Your existing lower stays exactly where it is.
This is also where shooters get confused when comparing large-bore AR options. Why 5.56 NATO Still Runs the Show

A 55-grain load out of a 16-inch barrel exits at roughly 3,100 fps. Recoil is minimal, which means fast, accurate follow-up shots. Standard 30-round magazines are everywhere, and the aftermarket is the largest in the industry. Cost per round makes high-volume practice realistic in a way larger calibers simply cannot match.
Past 500 yards, though, the physics get honest. A 55-grain FMJ retains roughly 400 to 500 ft-lbs at that distance, which is marginal for ethical hunting on deer-sized game. Wind drift compounds the problem, because lower-BC projectiles get pushed hard in a crosswind.

Head to Head: Ballistics and Recoil
The numbers tell the story fast. The 338 ARC 250-grain ELD-M leaves the muzzle at roughly 2,500 fps with about 3,470 ft-lbs of energy. The 5.56 NATO 55-grain M193 starts at 3,100 fps but generates only about 1,175 ft-lbs. That gap gets brutal downrange.
That is roughly seven times the terminal energy at 600 yards. The reason is ballistic coefficient. The 250-grain ELD-M posts a G7 BC of 0.290 or better, while a standard 55-grain FMJ runs about 0.151. The heavier bullet sheds velocity slower and bucks wind harder.

On recoil, the 338 ARC in a rifle-weight AR-15 feels comparable to a light .308 load. It is noticeable but not punishing, and a quality muzzle brake cuts felt recoil significantly. The 5.56 is simply softer, with faster follow-up shots and less fatigue over a long training day.
The 338 ARC buys you terminal energy at distance. The 5.56 buys you round count, cost, and availability. Both are real currencies.
Matching the Cartridge to the Mission
Bigger is better only when the mission calls for it. If you are shooting across open pasture, hunting hogs and whitetail at extended range, or pushing past 500 yards at a long-range match, the 338 ARC earns its place. Terminal energy and bullet diameter matter when a miss costs you an animal.
High-round-count training, home defense, competition, and any scenario where you need to source ammo locally on short notice all favor 5.56 NATO. Magazine capacity stays high, ammo costs stay manageable, and parts are available everywhere.
The practical solution is not a second rifle. A standard mil-spec lower accepts a 5.56 upper and a 338 ARC upper with zero modification. Run 5.56 for training most of the year, then swap to 338 ARC for hunting season.
What the Upper Swap Requires
You need a dedicated barrel chambered in 338 ARC and a cartridge-specific bolt. The case head geometry differs from 5.56, so a standard bolt will not work. Beyond that, the upper receiver itself is a standard AR-15 pattern, and no FFL is required for an upper-only purchase.
Gas system length matters. On a 16-inch or longer barrel, a rifle-length or mid-length system gives reliable cycling with heavy projectiles. A carbine-length system can over-gas the rifle and create extraction problems over time. Buffer weight is the other variable most builders overlook: an H2 or H3 buffer is the right call, because heavier projectiles generate more bolt velocity on the way back. Handguard selection follows normal AR logic, with standard M-LOK or Picatinny rails working fine.
