These two platforms share DNA but are built for different jobs, and picking the wrong one means buying parts twice. They both use Eugene Stoner's gas-operated, direct-impingement design. They are not interchangeable in any meaningful sense.
Where Each Platform Came From

The AR-10 is a 7.62x51mm NATO rifle Eugene Stoner designed in 1956 for ArmaLite, intended as a lightweight infantry rifle to replace the M1 Garand. The military chose the M14 instead. Stoner then scaled the design down for the 5.56x45mm cartridge, and that rifle became the AR-15 and later the M16. So the AR-10 is not a derivative of the AR-15. It is the other way around.
The AR-15 went on to dominate for practical reasons: modularity, an enormous aftermarket, manageable recoil, and cheaper ammunition than any comparable .308 platform. It also benefits from how the law treats it. The lower receiver is the serialized firearm; the upper is not. You can swap a 300 Blackout or 6.5 Grendel upper onto your existing lower with no paperwork and no FFL transfer.
The Physical Differences That Matter

The magazine well difference is absolute: AR-10 magazines are longer and wider to seat .308-length cartridges and will not fit an AR-15. The buffer difference matters just as much. AR-10 builds need the heavier buffer to manage higher carrier mass and recoil impulse, and dropping an AR-15 buffer into an AR-10 causes reliability problems immediately.

For hunters working shots inside 250 yards, a 450 Bushmaster or 350 Legend upper drops deer cleanly on a light AR-15. The AR-10 gives you more power. The AR-15 gives you more options.

The AR-10 Standardization Problem
There is no single universal AR-10 standard. ArmaLite, DPMS (LR-308), and SR-25 patterns use slightly different receiver dimensions, so a lower from one maker may not mate correctly with an upper from another. DPMS is the de facto modern standard and has by far the widest parts support. Platform choice is not a detail you sort out after the parts arrive. It is the first decision in the build.
Choosing by Use Case
Home defense. The AR-15 wins for most people. A 16-inch 5.56 or a 10.5-inch 300 Blackout upper is far easier to move through a hallway than a 20-inch .308. Less weight, shorter length, lower recoil, all of which matter under stress in a confined space.
Hunting. In dense brush where most shots come at close range, an AR-15 in 6.5 Grendel, 350 Legend, or 450 Bushmaster is fully capable. For elk, large hogs at distance, or open-country shots past 400 yards, step up to an AR-10 in .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor.
Long range. The AR-10 in 6.5 Creedmoor is the standard choice for precision work: high BC, manageable recoil, and widely available match ammunition. The AR-15 is not out of the running, though. 224 Valkyrie and 6mm ARC are legitimate to 800 or 1,000 yards, and the 338 ARC is an emerging option if you want to stay on a mil-spec lower.
One thing hits both platforms equally: heat and humidity accelerate carbon fouling and surface oxidation, especially on barrels and carriers stored in a truck safe. Apply the same cleaning discipline to either rifle.
