The stock on your AR-15 affects every shot you take. It sets your length of pull, your cheek weld, and how fast you get on target. This guide covers fixed, adjustable, and folding options so you can pick the right setup, whether the build is a long-range precision rifle, a compact truck gun, or something between.

What an AR-15 Stock Actually Does

A stock does three jobs: it provides a consistent cheek weld, transfers recoil into your shoulder, and anchors your body to the rifle during aimed fire. Get any one wrong and shot-to-shot consistency suffers no matter how well the rest of the rifle is built.

Mismatched stock height is one of the most common accuracy killers on otherwise solid builds. If your cheek weld shifts between shots, eye relief shifts with it, and point of impact follows.

Recoil management. On a direct-impingement AR-15 the buffer and spring cycle rearward with every shot. The stock absorbs and redirects that energy. A stock that sits at the wrong angle turns it into muzzle rise and lost target acquisition.

Buffer tube interface. Tube diameter and length decide what physically fits. Carbine tubes accept collapsible designs. Rifle-length tubes are required for most fixed stocks. Folding adapters are a separate mechanical category covered below.

Fixed Stocks: Precision and Simplicity

A fixed stock attaches directly to a rifle-length receiver extension and does not move. No wobble, no play, no positions to fumble under pressure. That rigidity is why fixed stocks remain standard for NRA High Power competition and serious precision gas-gun builds.

Every collapsible stock has some degree of flex where it meets the buffer tube, and on a precision build that movement becomes inconsistent cheek weld. A fixed stock removes the variable.

Designs and materials. The A1 and A2 are the mil-spec benchmarks. The A1 is the original glass-filled polymer design with roughly a 13-inch length of pull. The A2 is the more common configuration, same construction, 14.5-inch LOP. Modern precision fixed stocks step up to aluminum chassis designs with adjustable cheek risers and rubber butt-pads. Heavier, but far more repeatable than a standard A2.

Length of pull. LOP is the distance from the trigger face to the center of the butt-pad. The A1's 13 inches runs short. The A2's 14.5 inches fits a medium-framed adult in a t-shirt but becomes long with body armor or for smaller-framed shooters. Some precision fixed stocks use spacer systems that tune LOP in half-inch increments, which gives adjustment range without moving to a collapsible.

Adjustable and Collapsible Stocks

Collapsible stocks are the most common choice on AR-15 builds. A standard 6-position carbine tube gives roughly 10.5 to 13 inches of length of pull, about one inch per position. If you are building a truck gun or a home-defense rifle that multiple family members might shoot, a collapsible solves the fit problem immediately.

Mil-spec vs commercial tubes. Mil-spec carbine tubes measure about 1.148 inches in outer diameter; commercial tubes run about 1.168 inches. Stocks are cut for one or the other and do not reliably interchange. Mil-spec is the stronger and more widely supported standard. Measure before you order.

Locking mechanisms. A basic M4-style stock uses a simple lever latch. It works, but it allows rattle and can shift slightly under recoil. Enhanced designs like the Magpul CTR, B5 SOPMOD, and MOE add a friction lock or secondary lever that removes the slop. For precision use, that consistent lockup matters.

Comb height. Most collapsible stocks sit low relative to a mounted optic. If you run a red dot or LPVO on a riser, look for a stock with a raised comb or an add-on cheek riser so your head position stays natural instead of floating.

Folding Stocks and Folding Adapters

A standard AR-15 cannot simply take a folding stock. The buffer and spring live inside the receiver extension, and the carrier needs that space to cycle. A folding adapter installs between the lower receiver and the buffer tube, hinging the whole assembly to the left.

What that buys you: 6 to 8 inches off overall length for storage and transport, at a cost of roughly 3 to 4 oz. What it does not buy you: the ability to fire folded. On a direct-impingement AR-15, the rifle must be unfolded and locked before it will cycle.

Where it makes sense. A short-barreled pistol build with a folding brace fits in a pack or behind a truck seat. Vehicle storage, backpack carry on hunting leases, and range transport where case size matters are the honest use cases. Competition and precision work are not; rigidity beats packed length there.

ATF classifications around pistol braces have shifted more than once. Verify current federal, state, and local rules with a licensed FFL or attorney before you build.

Buffer Tube Length and Compatibility

This is where a lot of builds go sideways. The buffer tube is not a universal part.

Rifle-length tubes are longer and use a rifle buffer and spring. Carbine tubes use a shorter buffer with a carbine spring. If you change tube length on any build, swap both the buffer and the spring. One without the other creates cycling problems.

Butt-Pads, Ergonomics, and Sling Points

Butt-pad material makes a real difference. Hard polymer pads, standard on most M4-style stocks, are durable and consistent but transmit more felt recoil into your shoulder. Rubber and soft-polymer pads compress slightly on firing and take the edge off during high-volume sessions.

Sling attachment is the other ergonomic variable. QD cups give the fastest transitions and let the sling rotate without binding. Fixed loops are simpler and cannot fail open. Ambidextrous cups on both sides matter if you shoot from either shoulder around cover.

Most shooters spend hours picking a barrel and five minutes picking a stock. That is backwards. The stock is the only part of the rifle touching your body on every shot.

Length of pull is the single most important ergonomic variable. Too long and your elbow rises, your head moves forward, and your cheek weld breaks under recoil. Too short and you crowd the optic. If you shoot in a plate carrier through winter and a t-shirt in summer, that swing alone argues for an adjustable stock.
