How to Build an AR-10 - Parts, Process, and What to Expect

Building an AR-10 is a different animal than building an AR-15, and the parts process trips up a lot of builders who do not know the platform. This guide walks through every major component, from lower receiver to muzzle device, so you know exactly what you need before you spend money.

Understanding the Build Before You Buy

The AR-10 is not a bigger AR-15. That distinction matters before you order a single part. The platform lacks the standardization the AR-15 has enjoyed for decades, and that fragmentation is the single biggest reason first-time builders end up with a box of parts that do not fit together.

DPMS vs Armalite: Choosing Your Pattern

Before you order anything, make one decision that affects everything else: DPMS pattern or Armalite pattern. These two designs are not interchangeable.

DPMS pattern. Also called SR-25 compatible, this is the dominant aftermarket standard. The vast majority of complete .308 uppers, aftermarket lowers, handguards, and bolt carrier groups follow this spec. If you are sourcing parts from multiple vendors, this pattern gives you the widest selection and the fewest compatibility headaches.

Armalite pattern. The original design predates DPMS by decades. It is solid, but the aftermarket never standardized around it. Receiver dimensions, magazine interface geometry, and BCG specs all differ, parts availability is narrower, and prices run higher. There is no practical reason to choose it unless you already own an Armalite lower.

The DPMS upper receiver sits dimensionally taller than the Armalite version, and that height difference directly affects handguard fitment. Barrel extension and BCG geometry also differ, so a carrier group from one design will not headspace correctly in a barrel built for the other.

To confirm what you are buying, look for explicit language on the product page. If the listing does not specify, contact the vendor. The safest move is buying your upper and lower as a matched set, which eliminates pattern mismatch entirely. Mixing parts from separate vendors is the most common and most expensive mistake in a .308 AR build.

What Transfers From an AR-15 and What Does Not

On a DPMS-pattern AR-10 lower, most standard AR-15 small parts transfer directly:

  • Trigger group: trigger, hammer, disconnector, springs, and pins
  • Safety selector
  • Pistol grip
  • Takedown and pivot pins
  • Buffer tube, mil-spec carbine or rifle length
  • Stock
  • Magazine release and bolt catch

What does not transfer is where builds go wrong. The bolt carrier group is larger and heavier, built around a .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor bolt face. Drop an AR-15 BCG in and nothing cycles. The buffer and spring are also non-negotiable: a standard 3 oz carbine buffer does not have enough mass for the increased gas volume of a .308 platform. Use an H buffer or a rifle-length system, because skipping this is the number one cause of short-stroking on new AR-10 builds. Handguards must be AR-10 specific, since the upper receiver is wider than an AR-15 upper.

Most failed first AR-10 builds trace back to two parts: the wrong buffer and a handguard cut for the other pattern.

Caliber Options Beyond .308

The same receiver set supports multiple chamberings with a barrel and bolt swap, but confirm two things for each: magazine compatibility and bolt face diameter. The .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor share a bolt face and generally run the same magazines. Chamberings like .243 Winchester or 7mm-08 need a bolt matched to the case head, and some require magazine adjustments to feed reliably.

  • .308 Winchester: the workhorse. Easy to source, hits hard, widest factory load selection.

Tools Required

A standard AR-15 armorer's block will not secure an AR-10 upper properly, and using one risks crushing or cracking the receiver during barrel installation. Get the right block before you start.

  • Calibrated torque wrench covering 30 to 80 ft-lbs

Assembly Step by Step

Assembly order matters. Get the sequence wrong and you are pulling it back apart.

Upper. Secure the upper in an AR-10 block. Apply anti-seize to the barrel extension and receiver threads, seat the barrel with the extension pin indexed in the receiver slot, then install the barrel nut and torque to the manufacturer's spec, aligning gas tube clearance on the final pass. Install the gas block and gas tube, checking that the tube seats squarely into the upper. Mount the handguard.

Install the muzzle device next. AR-10 threads are typically 5/8x24; use a crush or peel washer and torque to spec. Then the BCG, followed by the charging handle. That order is not optional. Sliding the charging handle in first and then trying to seat the carrier is one of the most common first-build mistakes, and you will know immediately because nothing closes.

Lower.

  1. Install the trigger guard first.
  2. Drop in the trigger with the spring legs wrapped around the trigger pin.
  3. Set the disconnector on top of the trigger, then install the hammer with spring legs resting on the trigger pin.
  4. Install the safety selector, then the magazine catch and bolt catch.
  5. Drop in the buffer retainer and spring before threading the buffer tube.
  6. Install the pistol grip.
  7. Thread the buffer tube and torque the castle nut to at least 40 ft-lbs, then stake it.
  8. Drop in the buffer and spring, then attach the stock.

Break-In, Tuning, and Common Issues

Most new AR-10 builders expect the rifle to run perfectly out of the gate. It usually does not. Plan for a 100 to 200 round break-in before drawing conclusions about reliability or accuracy. The chamber is tight, the carrier group is stiff, and everything needs time to seat.

Expect stiff extraction in the first 50 rounds. Clean and lubricate thoroughly after the first range session, then go back out. Most early issues sort themselves out as components wear in.

An adjustable gas block is one of the smartest investments on a .308 build. Wide temperature swings change how a gas system behaves, and a rifle tuned for a cool morning can run over-gassed on a hot afternoon. Start with the block fully open, run 50 rounds, then close it down until you find the point where the bolt locks back reliably on an empty magazine.

Common failures and their usual causes: short-stroking points to a buffer that is too heavy or a gas port that is undersized or restricted. Brass ejecting forward of 3 o'clock with brutal recoil points to over-gassing. Failure to feed usually traces to magazine spec or a bolt that does not match the chambering.
