Know exactly what tools, solvents, and cleaning steps keep your AR-15 running. This guide breaks the topic down in plain language so you can make a confident decision for your build.
If your AR-15 is running dirty, it is only a matter of time before it lets you down. This guide covers the tools that belong in your kit, the chemistry that actually removes fouling, and the order of operations for cleaning the BCG, chamber, bore, and buffer tube.
What Belongs in the Kit

A proper kit starts with caliber-matched tools, a quality one-piece rod, and dedicated brushes for the chamber and bore. Everything else is secondary.
Bore brush diameter is not optional. A .223/5.56 brush, a .264 brush for 6.5 Grendel, and a .308 brush are three different tools. The wrong size either skips the bore surface entirely or scrubs rifling harder than it should be scrubbed.
One-piece rods only. Segmented aluminum rods flex under pressure, and that flex lets the rod contact the crown and bore at odd angles. Over time it mars both.
A dedicated chamber brush. Stiffer than a bore brush and long enough to reach the locking lug recesses, where carbon builds fastest at high round counts. A bore brush alone will not clean them.
Specialty tools worth adding. A dental pick or purpose-built carbon scraper earns its place. The bolt tail is where carbon cakes hardest and brushes will not break that crust loose. Jags and patches round out the kit for bore wiping after solvent.
What you can skip. Cheap forty-piece universal kits look like value. Most of the brushes cover calibers you do not own, the rods are segmented aluminum, and the patches are undersized.
Solvents, Lubricants, and CLP
Carbon vs copper solvents. Carbon fouling is the black, sooty buildup from powder combustion. It collects on the bolt face, bolt tail, gas key, and inside the carrier. Alkaline carbon solvents like Hoppe's No. 9, M-Pro 7, and Slip 2000 725 break it down fast.
Copper fouling is different: blue-green streaks inside the bore, left by jacketed bullet material. It requires an ammonia-based copper solvent like Bore Tech Eliminator or Sweet's 7.62. Keep those in the bore only. Ammonia-based solvents will damage the nitride or phosphate finish on your BCG.
Lubrication points. Four spots need attention every cleaning: the bolt cam pin, the bolt body and extractor area, the charging handle latch, and the upper receiver interior rails. The cam pin takes the most friction in the system, so use grease there and a thin film of oil everywhere else. Dry-running is the most common mistake new AR owners make.
CLP tradeoffs. CLP cleans, lubricates, and protects in one product, which makes it useful in the field. It is not the right tool for a thorough bench cleaning. For a full session, use a dedicated carbon solvent first, a copper solvent in the bore if needed, then a dedicated lubricant.
Field Strip and Clean, Step by Step

1. Clear the firearm and prep the workspace. Remove the magazine first. Lock the bolt back. Look into the chamber visually, then run a finger in to confirm it is empty. Lay out a mat and set your solvent, lubricant, patches, brushes, and picks within reach before you start.
2. Separate upper and lower. Push out the rear takedown pin until it stops, pivot the upper forward, push out the front pivot pin, and set the lower aside.
3. Remove the charging handle and BCG. Pull the charging handle back, draw the carrier group out, then lift the charging handle free of its channel.
4. Disassemble and clean the BCG. Pull the firing pin retaining pin, drop the firing pin out the rear, rotate and remove the cam pin, then slide the bolt out of the carrier. Scrape carbon from the bolt tail with a pick, clean the bolt face and extractor with solvent and a brush, and clean the inside of the carrier and the gas key face. Inspect the gas rings and extractor spring while everything is apart. Our BCG guide covers what each part does.
5. Clean the chamber, bore, and upper. In this order:
- Run a solvent-soaked patch on your rod from the chamber end toward the muzzle. Always work chamber to muzzle with a one-piece rod, and never reverse direction with a brush still in the bore.
- Run a caliber-correct bronze bore brush 5 to 10 passes.
- Follow with dry patches until they come out clean, then one lightly oiled patch.
- Scrub the chamber with a chamber brush and solvent, working the locking lugs and feed ramps.
- Wipe the upper receiver interior with a lightly oiled rag.
6. Clean the lower and buffer tube. Brush the trigger group area and wipe it down, then pull the buffer and spring, wipe both, and clean the inside of the tube. 7. Reassemble and function check. Lube the four points, reassemble, and confirm the bolt locks and releases cleanly on an empty chamber.
How Often to Clean
Storage cleaning is a different job than range cleaning. Before long-term storage, clean the bore thoroughly, apply a light protective oil coat to all metal surfaces, and close the action on an empty chamber. A rifle sitting in a non-climate-controlled safe through a humid summer needs a heavier protective coat than the round-count schedule alone suggests. When it comes back out, do a function check and apply fresh lube before the first round.
Signs Your Rifle Needs Attention Now
Failure to extract and short-stroking are not "clean it later" malfunctions. They point directly at a carbon-locked chamber, a dry extractor, or a restricted gas key. Stop and clean it.
Other specific indicators: a rattling buffer spring instead of smooth compression, a stiff or cracked extractor, gas rings that no longer hold the bolt extended under its own weight, and brass ejecting to an unusual clock position. Carbon buildup makes itself known around the 500-round mark, and it shows up as short-stroking and failures to extract that have nothing to do with your ammo.
Caliber-Specific Considerations
300 Blackout and suppressed builds. Subsonic loads burn powder at lower pressure, which means incomplete combustion and heavy carbon. A suppressor pushes extra carbon back into the action with every shot. Plan on BCG cleaning every 200 to 300 rounds on a suppressed 300 Blackout build, not 500.
Larger-bore calibers. Higher pressure and larger bullet diameters mean more copper fouling. Use a .264 brush for 6.5 Grendel and a .308 brush for .308 Win. Add a dedicated copper solvent for these; CLP alone will not cut heavy copper. Climate. Heat above 100 degrees paired with 70 to 80 percent humidity corrodes unprotected steel fast. A proper oil coat is not optional in those conditions, and dust works into adjustment channels and lock levers just as quickly.
