Where the Cartridge Came From
The Grendel was developed by Arne Brennan, Bill Alexander, and Janne Pohjoispää in 2003, with Alexander Arms bringing it to market. SAAMI standardized it in 2011, which is the real inflection point. Before that, components varied by manufacturer and interchangeability was inconsistent. After 2011, barrels, bolts, and magazines from different makers could be spec-matched with confidence.
The design problem was specific. The 5.56 NATO goes transonic around 1,340 fps, which happens at roughly 400 to 500 yards depending on barrel and load. Once a bullet drops through that threshold, gyroscopic stability breaks down and accuracy degrades fast. That is physics baked into the cartridge, and the Grendel was engineered around it using high-BC 6.5mm projectiles in the 100 to 130 grain range.
The parent case comes from the .220 Russian and 7.62x39 family. It uses a 0.442-inch bolt face against 0.378 inches on a .223/5.56 bolt, and that larger diameter is what lets it seat a heavier, higher-BC projectile while still fitting a standard AR-15 magazine well.
How It Fits the AR-15 Platform

What It Is Actually Good For

Deer. A 123-grain load from an 18-inch barrel retains over 1,000 ft-lbs at 300 yards, which exceeds ethical hunting minimums in most states. Hogs. On large boars, the heavier, higher-BC projectile punches through shoulder bone in a way a 55-grain varmint bullet simply will not, and the semi-auto platform keeps follow-ups fast when a sounder scatters.
Predators. Coyote hunters get a flat trajectory and better wind resistance at exactly the ranges where the shot is hard. Lighter 90 to 100 grain loads are the pick here if your twist supports them.

- Ammunition costs more. Quality brass-cased loads run roughly $1.00 to $1.50 per round against $0.35 to $0.60 for bulk brass-cased .223.
- Magazine capacity is lower and the magazines are a dedicated pattern rather than STANAG.
- Factory load selection is narrower than .308 or .243, and rural shelf presence is thin. Order online and stock up before season.
- It is not a 1,000-yard cartridge in the sense a 6.5 Creedmoor is.

Building One: What You Actually Need

Barrel and twist. An 18-inch barrel is the practical hunting choice: it balances velocity against a rifle you can still carry through timber. A 24-inch maximizes velocity for target work but is not a field gun. A 1:8 twist handles 100 to 130 grain bullets; go 1:7.5 for consistent 130-grain use.
